Main Topic Summer Solstice Celebration!
June 20 - 21
Midsummer is the most powerful day for the male aspect of the Divine. On this longest day of the year, light and life are abundant. At mid-summer, the Sun God has reached the moment of his greatest strength. He is in the prime of his life and in full adulthood. Midsummer Night's Eve is also special for adherents of the Faerie faith.
Traditional Foods: Garden fresh fruits and vegetables are made into a variety of dishes and eaten by Pagan's who choose to celebrate this day.
Herbs and Flowers: Mugwort, Vervain, Chamomile, Rose, Honeysuckle, Lily, Oak, Lavender, Ivy, Yarrow, Fern, Elder, Wild Thyme, Daisy, Carnation.
Incense: Lemon, Myrrh, Pine, Rose, Wisteria.
Woods Burned: Oak
Sacred Gemstone: Emerald
Special Activities: An Ideal time to reaffirm your vows to the Goddess and the God. It is at this time that a couple who have been together a year and a day since the previous Beltane (May 1) can make their marriage final. Midsummer is the time to formalize any relationship. Midsummer is also an excellent time to re-new wedding vows.
Since this sabbat revolves around the sun, a candle should be lit for the entire day, especially if it is cloudy or raining. The fire represents the sun and is a constant daily reminder of the power of the God.
Fun & Beautiful Solstice Ritual:
Here is a simple and beautiful ritual you and your family can do together to celebrate this day! This is a fairly traditional ritual (thank you Herne!) celebrating the Divine in Nature, as our Great Mother and Great Father.
What You'll Need: A white candle in the center of your table, a green candle on the right and a red candle on the left. A glass of spring water. A bundle of slightly dried, fresh herbs (white sage, rosemary and lavender are great). You'll also need a fire-proof container like an iron pot or cauldron.
Light the Green Candle in honor of the Goddess, saying:
"Oh, Mother of Nature, She that brings the meadow to bloom, Green Forest Mother, from lakes and streams your children spring forth.
Blessed Lady of the stars and the Moon, Fruitful Womb which I honor, I ask of Thee Thy Blessings."
Light the Red Candle in honor of the Sun God, saying:
"Oh, Father of all things, He that plants the seed and nurtures Life.
God of Fertility and Fruitfulness, from hill and forest your children emerge.
Blessed Lord of the blazing Sun, potent Consort which I honor, I ask of Thee Thy Blessings."
Take some fresh herbs and hold them high above, saying:
"By thy gift, oh sweet herbs, may the Lord of the Sun burn away the hurtful, the troublesome, and the painful, leaving me purified through His warmth and Light."
Hold them over your central White Candle to take flame. While they are burning, drop them in the fire-proof container, saying:
"Great Goddess and Great God, from Thee all powers flow forth.
The Two that are One, Great Spirit of All-That-Is,
By Thy powers, and the powers of Air, Fire, Water, and Earth,
By Thy powers, and the powers of the Sun, Moon, and Stars,
I banish these negatives from my life."
Visualize the negatives burning away to nothingness. When all that is left is ashes, douse the ashes with the cup of Fresh Spring Water, feel as if the water was being poured over you and your negatives washed away. When done, face the candles, wave a hand over the cauldron and say:
"As the Phoenix rises from the ashes, so let this water be pure and new.
Mother Goddess, bless this water so that it may bless and renew me.
Father God, may your rays of the Midsummer Sun bless and nourish me. Two that are One, may your blessings sustain me as I journey, anew."
Pass your cupped hands over the cauldron, pausing briefly each time to ' pour ' in wishes for health, prosperity, and good fortune to be part of your life.
Dip the forefinger of your right hand into the cauldron water, and touch it to your forehead, saying: "Let my mind be open to the truth."
Anoint your lips saying: "Let my lips always speak the truth."
Anoint your heart area, saying: "Let my heart seek the ways of the Goddess and the God, now and always."
Anoint the centers of your palms, saying: "Let my hands be gifted to work in spiritual ways."
Anoint the soles of your feet, saying: "Let my feet ever walk upon the sacred paths!"
Have a picnic when you're finished and count the many blessings in your life!
Padmasambhava Padmasambhava and Crazy Wisdom*
by: Elizabeth Anglin and Juanita Cheng
If you don't know about Padmasambhava, that's OK... Here's the skinny:
Padmasambhava is considered by some a Bodhisattva (fully enlightened being who remains embodied to help others achieve their enlightenment). By Tibetan Buddhists he is considered the second physically incarnate Buddha.
His historical manifestation was a renowned scholar, meditator and white magician (in the Buddhist sense - i.e. no pointy star-studded hats, boiling cauldrons or crystal balls).
It is said that the first historical Buddha, the Sakyamuni, predicted Padmasambhava's birth. In the "Manjusri-nama-sangiti" he says: A glorious Lotus-born Buddha, omniscient, possessing the treasury of Transcendental Wisdom, shall come: He is the sovereign manipulator of Illusion, the great Buddha who teaches the way of Secret Mantra*.
As predicted, Padmasambhava was born from a lotus flower already fully enlightened at birth. Raised as the royal heir to the kingdom of Uddiyana, he nevertheless had lots of adventures as a youngster which got him into trouble with the rest of society. As an already fully enlightened child, he didn't necessarily find a need to follow the rules of a non-enlightened society. He renounced the throne and caused the accidental death of a baron's wife and son. But it is said that he put these events in motion in order to stop the evil attack of some seriously icky anti-dharma forces storming Uddiyana.
Padmasambhava ended up being banished and/or imprisoned for a very long time. Either way, he went through hell, pretty literally. He eventually traveled to Tibet, always using his power over illusion, matter and energy (i.e. his "magic") to confront and banish evil, and spread the Dharma wherever he went.
When he finally arrived in Tibet proper, he made his entrance riding a female tiger. Immediately, he began to clear the country of a bunch of really nasty black magicians and corrupt Hindu pandits, finally establishing Buddhism in Tibet.
Padmasambhava is a crazy guy (well, see, he rode a female tiger into Tibet... without a bridle even). His "magic", called the Secret Mantra*, or Secret Wisdom*, espouses an experiential approach to enlightenment. Enlightenment is not gained by escaping physical reality through navel-gazing, but by living fully in reality while walking the dharma path. In other words, following the small still voice within and acting on it.
He advocates the "Just Do It" approach - act in your higher knowledge, see what happens, and evolve from the experience. He is the teacher of people who need to learn the fine art of not over-thinking things, how not to become bogged down in worry about the future or second guessing one-self. He is very assertive. Some might even say aggressive.
Sitting back and trying to ascertain the nature of reality by being the proverbial fly on the wall of life is not an activity one will find on Professor Padmasambhava's "Life and Reality 101" course syllabus.
Padmasambhava is all about getting things done by engagement and embracing change - embracing the fear of change and the unknown - actively, whole-heartedly.
Recently, the spirit of Padmasambhava touched both our lives (Elizabeth's and Juanita's). And as a result Elizabeth is pretty sure she bought a house. She hasn't yet seen this house, but she's pretty sure that she will buy it and that it is the right thing for her to do. She felt called to do it.
Here's what happened: Juanita's partner is in possession of a property that is a great physical and spiritual burden/block to him. They both very much need this thing out of their lives.
One night, Juanita offered prayers and recited mantras to Padmasambhava, whom she humbly reveres as her healing guru, seeking his help to resolve this issue. Elizabeth, meanwhile, had had an idea: she needed a property, Juanita and her partner needed to get rid of theirs.... It seemed like a win-win situation. But it was a scary one.
So Elizabeth consulted her guides, as well as a few psychic friends (not the kind with 1-800-numbers!) One of them said, "I see a Tibetan monk with one of those funny monk hats sitting above you and his arms are outstretched over your arms, one hand on Juanita's head, the other on her partner's."
When Elizabeth and Juanita showed this friend an artist's rendering of Padmasambhava, the friend shouted "That's him! That's who I saw!"
That is Crazy Wisdom. Social rule and law says "When you buy a house, see it first... get an appraiser to go appraise it, and an inspector to inspect it, and make sure you have totally checked every nook and cranny of that house out for problems (termites, water damage, left behind mother-in-laws, old meth labs, etc.)"
Padmasambhava type Crazy Wisdom says "It feels right for me (I believe spirit/god calls me) to buy this house... so I am just going to buy it and see what happens. This will be a learning experience. Reality will teach me things about myself and the universe I cannot learn any other way."
We don't advocate Crazy Wisdom for everyone at all times - that would be, well, crazy. However, Crazy Wisdom is an important aspect of courage to grow in life and in spirit.
Christians call crazy wisdom "active faith" or "acts of faith" and many heroic Christian saints have been Crazy Wisdom practitioners.
Joan of Arc is a lovely example of a Christian Crazy Wisdom practitioner. God said "Go do this." and she went and did it. She didn't say. "Well, you know God... I am only a female, and you know... it is a war, and you know.. I don't really know anything about warfare... and besides, who is going to listen to me? How can I be of service? I understand you are telling me I can be... but I just don't see how you can be correct."
Crazy Wisdom isn't "passive voice", to use the parlance of an English teacher. It is a verb. It is a pedal-to-the-metal approach to life as the soul's training-ground. It is fearless. It is trusting. And it is the road to grace. So happy travels folks!
*Crazy Wisdom, aka the Secret Wisdom, aka the Secret Mantra, is the active part of Bodhichitta (the Buddha-Mind, the Enlightened-Mind of which all the universe is a manifestation). And Padmasambhava is its physical incarnation, as was the Sakyamuni, as was Rama, as was Christ....
Plant an Abundance Garden!
By: Juanita Cheng
Spring... Summer... Its Gardening Time! Our friends among the plant people will work with us and bless us if we work with and honor them. So why not add several lovely and fragrant plants among your tomatoes and pole beans that will encourage and maintain a spirit of abundance in your life?
Here's a list of plants that carry that energy within them and will grace your home and property:
alfalfa, basil, camellia, chamomile, cinquefoil, corn, dill, heliotrope, honeysuckle, jasmine, lavender, lettuce, marigold, mint, morning glory, nasturtium, onion, and grapes.
Some are decorative and fragrant, others are great herbs for cooling teas. Some can be grown easily in our special NM climate, others might do better indoors. But all of them are lovely and willing to help us call in an energy of abundance and prosperity.
Here's a few very simple thing you can do to taste and actualize the energies of these green friends:
1) Make sun tea from basil or mint. While placing the leaves in water, be aware of and grateful for all the love and abundance in your life, be aware of and grateful for all the abundance to come. Let your jug of tea sit in the sun for a day, add honey to taste, ice, and enjoy!
2) Dry some alfalfa in the sun. Smell its life giving sweetness. Burn a bit in a flame-proof container like a cook pot. Then sprinkle the ashes around your property! You can also carry dried alfalfa and corn in a medicine bag.
And remember, whenever you work with plant spirts, thank the plants while you cut what you need and water them afterwards. And always feel a sense of gratitude for what you now have in your life, what these sweet green spirits bring you, and what you will have in the future!
Pat's Meditation Pat's Meditation:
THE LAUGHING EYES OF A CHILD
When we gaze into the
Laughing eyes of a child
There, we can vividly see
Reflecting brightly
The potential of her life.
Behold, the possibilities
Her future holds.
Today her eyes are filled with hope,
Her dreams are unlimited,
Her expectations unrestricted.
The confidence we observe within
Her look is boundless,
She knows no reason
Why she cannot succeed.
This child offers us a glimpse of a
New beginning
Presented with each generation.
She holds for us the hope of the
Continuation of our own possibilities.
Therefore, it is our
Great responsibility to
Preserve her
Enormous anticipation.
We must continuously support her,
Encouraging her hesitant steps
As she begins her growth of her
Mind
Body and
Spirit
Developing strength as her life expands.
We have an obligation
To her and her sisters and brothers
To assist them with their
expanding experiences,
To always support their explorations,
To continue our aid in their
Small steps and
Giant leaps in curiosity.
Their questions deserve our full
Attention and unrestricted truth
We must remain sensitive to their
Enormous range of emotions
They are capable of expressing,
Allowing them the freedom
To demonstrate their passions.
They are God’s precious gifts to us
And to the world.
They are here to
Assist in the healing of
The people of the earth and
The earth itself.
Take heart, dear child,
Your purpose is clear.
Let us all see the
Hope
Expectations and
Faith
Which lie within her
Laughing Eyes.
